Permanent street pedestrianization, Montrealers want consultation
“A big no,” said François Vincent of CFIB, after a Léger poll showed that 87% of Montreal residents believe the City should consult merchants before making major changes to commercial streets, such as Plaza St-Hubert. Johanie Bouffard reports.
Many business owners are unhappy after the City of Montreal announced the pedestrianization of Plaza Saint-Hubert for three more summers, along with 10 other commercial streets.
“So the first thing in a democracy, is that municipalities should do is to listen to their business owner that will be impacted on their decision and listen to the population. And in both cases, population business owner are saying a big no. So the city of Montreal should not go forward with that,” said Francois Vincent, the vice-president of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business in Quebec.
“Since this is a democracy, we need to listen to the opinion of the population…” of business owners? You mean, the overwhelming minority of people that use a street?
Edit: I reread and I think I misinterpreted what this person meant, but business owners do seem to think only their opinion matters or that their opinion is worth far more.

The raised concrete planters here reminds me of Duluth which has only changed slightly over the years. I really like this use of concrete, it adds shape, raises plants up, and slows vehicles when it cuts into the road
