Then you must have never used Amazon…

I am far from pretending they are perfect or that we should encourage these sharks, but it is hard to deny they are too often the best from a customer’s perspective, if not from a societal perspective.

Their customer’s service is exceptional, especially in that accessible price range (only matched probably by Costco). You never wait long on the phone, their opening hours are unbeatable, and they are as hassle-free as one could hope. Their return policy is so good it borders on ridiculous, and you get most orders the next day at your doorstep, all that with only 2 clicks. It’s much easier and often quicker than going to any store in person. Their selection is endless, and it’s not all that rare that for specific products they are the only distributors. It’s a one-stop shop for most products people need (except grocery goods). Their price competitiveness varies, but sometimes they are still cheaper than alternatives.

So yes, Bezos is a horrible capitalist and his company represents an existential threat to a lot of its competitors, their employees are mistreated (the products most of our local companies sell export that mistreatment to Asia, so it’s less shocking than exploited Canadians I guess), etc. etc. etc.

But not to recognize why they are successful? The service they sell is popular for a reason. We can denounce all the detrimental impacts they bring, just like we can denounce yearly trips to the Caribbean as being environmentally destructive, but that product also sells for a reason.
