The answer to Britain’s housing problems might be to build an entirely new city offshore in the Thames Estuary. So suggests Ian Mulcahey, Global Leader of Cities & Urban Design practice at global architecture practice Gensler.
[…]
The idea of locating urban expansion on artificial islands has been tried with some success — notably in Amsterdam and Copenhagen — but the Thames Estuary remains a challenging and controversial site. The river mouth’s low-lying banks are increasingly vulnerable to flooding, while the area’s mudflats are vital stopping off points for migratory birds — factors that led then-London Mayor Boris Johnson’s advocacy for a new airport located in the estuary being dismissed as impractical. Add to this concerns around the over-concentration of investment in Britain’s southeast at the rest of the country’s expense and the concept of a new island city does seem to be one that faces major challenges.

Artificial islands in the Thames Estuary waters and banks just to London’s east could provide enough space to relieve the nation’s housing crisis.

Singer Akon’s Multibillion-Dollar Futuristic City in Africa Gets Final Notice

  • Senegal gives singer deadline to start building his Akon City
  • Akon’s African metropolis plagued by controversies and delays

A single arched concrete block juts out of a field in Senegal where R&B singer Akon first laid the foundation stone for his $6 billion metropolis four years ago.

The West African nation granted the artist 136 acres of land on its Atlantic Coast in 2020 to build his Akon City — envisioned as a real-life Wakanda, the fictional country from Marvel Studios’ Black Panther films.

Complete with condominiums, amusement parks and a seaside resort in gravity-defying skyscrapers rising above the rural landscape, Akon City would run on solar power and his Akoin cryptocurrency, the American-Senegalese singer said during a flashy presentation in Senegal’s capital, Dakar.

Countries like senegal need base level infrastructure investment - in education, water access, sanitation, healthcare and transportation infrastructure. Not a bitcoin real estate grift. If it wasn’t akon it would be some Chinese real estate conglomerate probably, but these types of projects rarely, if ever, help more than the politicians and ultra wealthy of these countries. And there are projects like this abound, in Indonesia, Malasia, Nigeria, Egypt etc. You cannot run away from fundamental issues by creating “new generation” cities from scratch…

CalTrain’s EMUs began operations this weekend. Colour me extremely jealous. You’ve all seen my nauseatingly frequent rants about how good EXO could be if we just had the will.

Multi-use Costco and IKEA downtown would succeed here, and likely relieve quite a bit of traffic around both Bridge and Cavendish. Even better if Costco Bridge could be rebuilt as multi-use within the larger Bridge-Mill redevelopment. Bonus: these might keep some unsafe Communauto drivers off the roads!
