That’s pretty much how it goes for just about all tunneling machines out there. They are one use machine purpose built for a single job. Fortunately, they aren’t all that expensive when you consider just how costly transit projects are. To be had, I do beleive that the existing tunnel is in good hard rock under the airport parking, so the rest of the tunnel can probably be dug safely with mechanical excavation.
Very possible that it’s not REM-related, but two weeks ago I saw a crew working on what looked like taking soil samples in the parking lot south of the station. The holes were filled in when I came back in the evening.
