Canada: Samuel de Champlain Bridge Opens to Rail Traffic

The Réseau express métropolitain (REM) de Montréal has begun operating across the Samuel De Champlain Bridge in Quebec, Canada.
This opening for light rail traffic comes three years after the bridge started serving pedestrians and road vehicles.
The Samuel de Champlain Bridge is a multimodal crossing connecting the cities of Brossard and Montreal. It is 3.4 kilometres long and is one of the widest bridges in the world, with 50 metres of deck.

SYSTRA IBT, T.Y Lin International and SNC Lavalin worked in consortium to ensure the tracks could open to rail traffic.
Following this success, the REM du Sud is scheduled to open on the same axis as the Bridge in December 2022. It will be operated with driverless automatic trains that will connect Brossard to the Central Station across the St. Lawrence River. This service aims to promote a modal shift to automated REM transit.
