Excerpts from Tremblay’s rail plan off track, critics say in the July 9th 2007 edition of the Montreal Gazette,
CTV a repris la nouvelle
Montreal’s light-rail system, the Réseau express métropolitain (REM), has reached a key construction milestone with the first successful run on the future airport branch, which will eventually link downtown to the Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport.
Project officials say the test marks the start of a new phase of work on the airport segment.
It allows teams to begin validating rail infrastructure and communications systems on that portion of the network.
More history!
I was wondering why there was a “new passenger line” on this map that went through north of where the airport is now.
It turns out that CN had originally intended to build a line connecting Bois-Franc (then Val-Royal) to its line around Pointe-Claire (near where the golf club is now). This was all part of a plan to connect the railroads around Montreal to a new terminal station (i.e. Gare Centrale).
Unfortunately, shortly after the plans had been drawn up, the Great Recession hit, CN revenues dropped, and the line was cut from the plans to save costs.
