The Van Horne overpass will be demolished by 2030, it was revealed as details of a revised development project for Mile End’s historic Entrepôt Van Horne were shared during a public information session Monday evening.
Nothing was said about what will replace the overpass, but it would need to fit with other recent projects built under and around it, which have helped bring life to the forlorn area between Mile End and Rosemont, including a new basketball court, a skate park and Lhasa de Sela Park.
Asking to see documentation about plans for the artery, Heritage Montreal policy director Dinu Bumbaru said 2030 “is the day after tomorrow.”
Sylvie Allen, urban planning adviser for the city, acknowledged that 2030 is coming up fast but said “that information is not known.” Work was done in 2019 to extend the overpass’s life for 10 years, she added. “Consultations will start soon between the two boroughs (Plateau-Mont-Royal and Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie), and there will be a roundtable for all projects around the overpass and its surroundings.”
