It wouldn’t need to require a larger ROW. It could be another track slightly away from the platform, to give freight trains space, like Kaufungen in Germany:

Want an even closer example? The exo Saint-Jerome line has it! On the bridge between Montreal and Laval, the tracks get very close but don’t actually merge!

In exo’s case, the new rolling stock could still work and run closer to the platforms, giving seamless level boarding, without needing to flip any platforms up or worry about hiring more employees that use ramps
