Alright. After a few days of worry, I found the relevant maps showing the location and thickness of clay deposits.

For HSR, the most worrisome areas are between Ottawa and Limoges, the section through Montmorency, and the clay escarpements around Brise-Culotte and Pointe-du-Lac. It looks like the most of the line to Trois-Rivières is on ancient beach sediments which are significantly better at holding up a railway.

It does mean that some of the straightest sections of right-of-way we have on the way to Ottawa may have to be some of the slowest, but on the upside, that makes the co-location of freight and HSR right-of-ways easier to design.

Looking at these maps, it also now makes a lot of sense as to why Highway 417 makes the big deviation south.

Finally, thank goodness noone was hurt in the landslide this morning. Centre-du-Québec | Un glissement de terrain majeur a emporté une maison à Sainte-Monique | La Presse
That’s what this clay can do.
