Very possible. Since Ch. 11 their strategy is more “mixed” with Low Cost elements and so if they think there is unserved demand they might fly 3, 4, 5 times per week. Their North America network is less and less based on high frequencies to a few cities, and more opportunistic. It would be great to see them here. It will be an annoying flight on an A319/320 though, 5 hours…
In other reports they state they want to fly daily here. With Air Canada as their alliance partner here it should work well. They’ve mentioned YUL pre pandemic so it’s been int their plans for awhile. They just needed to straighten out financially after covid first.

I agrée. I’ve been to both Barcelona and Madrid. Loved them both for different reasons. They’re great walking and foodie cities. Madrid in particular is under appreciated. good to hear AC is finally going to fly to MAD from YUL. I read on another forum it might be at the expense of Amsterdam though. Apparently they leased gates for our flights there that they won’t have next year and may have to drop the route. Let’s hope not.

On another topic, and again, my apologies if it has already been discussed earlier, but it seems that YUL is being left out of Air Canada Cargo’s expansion plans, at least so far. I presume it’s because they can’t integrate it with their operations at YUL if they have to use YMX. I’m sure it’s much more complicated and deeper than just that, but I was wondering if there has been any talk of YUL opening a cargo base for any cargo operators at the airport in the future. It seems weird that we’re not pursuing this business and Mirabel just holds the fort, so to speak. If it weren’t for CargoJet at YMX, it has just been the same FedEx and UPS flights with very little growth over time. Or am I missing something?

It’s been a long time since AC flew cargo-only flights to YUL. Even though they are operating from a large new facility on Reverchon, for the last 15 years they’ve only been handling lower-deck cargo from passenger flights. Way back when AC made the decision to convert most of their dedicated cargo aircraft back to passenger configurations and retire the Combis, there was plenty of room for cargo pallets and ULDs in the lower deck holds. Now flights are leaving full or almost full, which leaves precious little room for cargo. The remaining dedicated cargo aircraft generally fly transpacific, and it’s simply cheaper and easier to bring them to YVR and then forward from there on passenger flights to stations across the country.
They also have 767F flights to Liege and flights from Toronto via Halifax to Europe plus several flights to South America. I’m not even aware of all cargo flights to Asia yet, where are they going? There’s a couple of 777F’s on order too which I believe are set to primarily fly to Asia.
To my point though, there are many other cargo airlines from FedEx to Cargolux to Atlas Air etc… developing a decent cargo hub here isn’t really an extraordinary idea. Other than CargoJet Mirabel has been stagnant for years. Montreal is well positioned to pass cargo through to the entire continent I don’t see why we’re not trying harder to take at least a slightly bigger chunk of that volume.

After three months of flow-control ground delay programs, no thanks. 06L-24R can’t open soon enough, but we’ll be at capacity soon enough. Heavies need wider spacing.

Une dizaine de nouveaux restaurants ont ouvert leurs portes à l’aéroport Montréal-Trudeau au cours des deux dernières années.
Exit les Big Mac et les frites. Ici, les viennoiseries, les sandwiches et le café sont à l’honneur et servis avec rapidité pour des clients pressés. Le McCafé, nouveau concept développé par la célèbre chaîne de restauration rapide, fera son entrée au Québec à l’aéroport Montréal-Trudeau, une enseigne qui s’ajoute à une dizaine de nouveaux venus à YUL au cours des deux dernières années.

L’ouverture prévue en juillet du McCafé – le premier à atterrir dans un aéroport canadien –, près de l’entrée des départs internationaux, arrive à point puisque le besoin d’offre de déjeuners est criant, faisait observer Guy Landry, directeur, développement immobilier et commercial, au cours d’une visite de l’aéroport avec La Presse.
« Nous avons longuement réfléchi à la meilleure façon de faire. Pour les voyageurs, le concept McCafé nous paraît idéal », ajoute pour sa part Patrick Gerber, vice-président, restaurants et franchisés, de McDonald’s pour l’Est du Canada.

Pourquoi ne pas simplement ouvrir un comptoir McDo traditionnel avec des croquettes de poulet et de Joyeux Festins au menu ?
Dans un endroit comme [un aéroport], les gens vont aimer pouvoir prendre leur café rapidement, manger un truc simple sur le pouce. Nous avons adapté le menu pour répondre à ces besoins.

Plusieurs bornes seront installées pour faciliter la prise de commandes.
Le seul autre restaurant McCafé au pays se trouve d’ailleurs à la gare Union Station de Toronto. Le concept pourrait donc bien apparaître dans des lieux achalandés où les clients potentiels sont pressés.
Impossible toutefois de savoir combien de McCafé le géant de la restauration rapide a l’intention d’ouvrir au Québec. « Nous allons évaluer ce que ça donne, mentionne M. Gerber. Nous voulons tester le concept dans différents endroits. »
Offre renouvelée et divertissement
Par ailleurs, d’autres détaillants ont également élu domicile à l’aéroport après le retour des voyageurs. « Quelqu’un qui n’a pas mis les pieds ici depuis janvier 2022 remarquera une dizaine de nouveaux commerces », souligne Guy Landry.

Le magasin de vêtements Hatley, YUL Pizza, Livia et Carlos & Pepe’s comptent parmi les nouvelles « adresses » ouvertes après la pandémie. « La COVID, ça nous a permis de reprendre des espaces qui performaient moins », reconnaît M. Landry. Le célèbre restaurant L’Avenue des Canadiens, dans la zone des vols intérieurs, qui n’était pas « à la hauteur des attentes », fait partie des restaurants qui ont mis fin à leurs activités. L’aéroport va le transformer en salon à usage commun.
On a également donné des airs de camion de rue à un Subway. « Dans la zone internationale, il fallait qu’on s’ajuste. On manquait de restaurants d’entrée de gamme », souligne-t-il. Captifs, plusieurs voyageurs ont l’impression que se sustenter à l’aéroport en attendant leur vol leur coûte extrêmement cher. « Une fausse perception », assure Guy Landry, précisant tout de même que l’on ajoute 10 % au prix normalement affiché dans un restaurant dans la rue, par exemple.

On assure que les exploitants ne profitent pas de l’occasion pour gonfler les prix sur le menu. « On surveille les prix, souligne Renée Lebel, directrice, expérience client. On envoie des clients mystère. » Ainsi, chaque mois, une soixantaine de voyageurs triés sur le volet sont appelés à évaluer incognito les restaurants : les prix, le service, la rapidité, le menu…

S’ils ne comptent plus leurs heures de travail, les restaurateurs de l’aéroport reconnaissent qu’en ce moment, ils ne sont pas en pénurie… de clients. « Près de 80 % du temps, on est à pleine capacité », assure le directeur général d’Archibald microbrasserie, Pier-Émile Jomphe, ajoutant dans la foulée que la succursale de YUL est sans doute celle qui fonctionne le plus parmi les autres adresses de l’entreprise québécoise.
En plus de se sustenter, les voyageurs accompagnés d’enfants – qui appréhendent le temps d’attente parfois anormalement long avant de monter à bord de l’avion – pourront compter cet été sur de nouvelles stations de jeux et de divertissements récemment aménagées. Attention aux joueurs passionnés, un vol est si vite manqué.
