C’est Bixi qui déneige.
Merci !

The Bike Share Dilemma
Bikeshares and scootershares (also known as “Shared Micromobility) is one of the fastest growing forms of transportation on the planet today, but cities are deeply divided on how to manage them.
I partnered with @HUBCycling to pull back the curtain on how these services work, why cities can’t seem to agree on how to treat them, and how Metro Vancouver could benefit from a regional bike share system.

Bikeshares and scootershares (also known as “Shared Micromobility) is one of the fastest growing forms of transportation on the planet today, but cities are deeply divided on how to manage them.
In Montréal, bikeshare is fully owned and subsidized by the local government, while in Seattle it’s operated by private startups like Lime and Bird that pay significant fees to the city.

Bixi coming to Dollard-des-Ormeaux this summer

Dollard-des-Ormeaux will get its first Bixi bikes and stations this summer, making it the first West Island city to get the bike-sharing service.
In the coming months, 60 new bikes (30 electric and 30 standard) will be added to the streets of the West Island municipality, Bixi confirmed this week. Bixi currently serves all 19 boroughs of the city of Montreal as well as the demerged cities of Montréal-Est, Town of Mount Royal and Westmount. Outside the island of Montreal, Bixi serves the cities of Laval, Longueuil, Boucherville, Terrebonne, Ste-Julie, Sherbrooke, St-Eustache, Deux-Montagnes and St-Lambert.
Eftyhia Volakakis, a spokesperson for Dollard Mayor Alex Bottausci, said the city intends to add seven Bixi stations that will be strategically placed in order to facilitate access to both the Sunnybrooke and Pierrefonds-Roxboro REM stations. The city is also working with the borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro to allow for better integration between the two areas. The actual station placement will be determined by Bixi in the months leading up to the implantation.
A city of nearly 50,000 residents, Dollard-des-Ormeaux has several bike paths throughout its territory, including a regional path that connects it to neighbouring Kirkland along a corridor located parallel to De Salaberry Blvd. That bike path starts at the Bois-de-Liesse nature park and runs west all the way to Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue.
Speaking to The Gazette Wednesday, Dollard city councillor Anastasia Assimakopoulos said she hopes the addition of Bixi will help improve mobility in her city.
“We know that no individual pieces will solve people’s mobility challenges, so every little bit helps,” said Assimakopoulos, who has been outspoken about problems for her residents to access and park at the Sunnybrooke REM station, which is located just outside the city.
A spokesperson for Bixi added that the bike sharing service already began adding bikes around the Deux-Montagnes REM station last year and also added Pierrefonds in the same year. The bike sharing service will continue to work with West Island cities in the coming years to improve mobility within those cities, as well as access to the REM.
Assimakopoulos said there seems to be a lot of anticipation for Bixis to come to Dollard, as the De Salaberry path connects to some key points in the city, including several schools.
“That path also gives kids a safe way to walk to school,” she added.
While the goal of enrolling in Bixi is to allow Dollard residents cycling access to some of the REM stations, they will have to wait until at least 2027 to park Bixis at the Fairview and Des Sources REM stations on the future Anse-à-l’Orme branch. Although that branch is slated to begin service this year, the city of Pointe-Claire will only be getting Bixis starting in 2027 at the earliest, Mayor John Belvedere told The Gazette recently.
“I would hope they come to the REM stations, but it will be up to the Bixi people to determine when they do their evaluation,” he said.
Belvedere said he hopes that Bixi helps his residents access bus stations and public transit hubs, because he believes the STM’s redesigned West Island bus network will still leave many residents far from a bus stop or a REM station.
Aside from accessing the REM, Belvedere believes if his city integrates Bixi, it will lead to better mobility between all neighbouring cities.
“We see that Dorval is looking to get Bixis too, so we have to work to get Beaconsfield, Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue and the other West Island municipalities to join also, otherwise it won’t be as useful for our citizens.”
The Montreal Metropolitan Community is also in the planning stages of a so-called Véloroute, which would be built in the REM’s corridor, allowing bikes to travel throughout the REM’s route and connect to all stations on the light-rail network. That cycling network is still a far way from becoming reality, but construction could begin in the coming years. The latest projection pegged 2032 as the target date to complete construction of the path.
Looking forward to the western part of DDO getting Bixi Stations too. I think having stations all across the Salaberry Bike Path further west all the way to Kirkland (and beyond) as a sort of backbone, connecting to the Fairview REM Station, Kirkland and AAO, will truly have a positive impact on the West Island and help at least some demographic in being less car dependent. I will keep pushing for Bixi Stations further west during Municipal Council meetings.
