Prolongement du contrat d’entretien du matériel roulant de GO Transit et UP Express

Ontario signs $1.3B, 5-year deal with Alstom for GO Transit and UP Express trains

After months of uncertainty about the future of who would be charged with operating and maintaining an expansive fleet of GO Transit and UP Express trains, the Ontario government is signing a five-year deal with its long-time service provider.

A GO train was seconds away from a ‘high fatality’ crash. This is preventable, experts say

A GO train carrying 120 passengers was within seconds of derailing near Oakville earlier this year, according to an internal Metrolinx report obtained by the Star, a close call that one expert said could have resulted in a “high-fatality” crash.

The close call raises questions about transparency with the public, oversight and safety measures Metrolinx has been slow to implement.

Après la Expo Line, voici la Canada Line à Vancouver.

Winnipeg plans new heated bus shelters with shatter-resistant panels

Metrolinx’s promise of two-way, all-day GO service has been delayed, internal documents from the provincial transit agency show.

Meanwhile, under the reframed vision for what’s known as GO Expansion, some riders on the province’s train system could find their trips getting slower, not faster.

Announced in 2018 and originally meant to be done by 2032, the $27-billion GO Expansion plan would have effectively transformed GO from a commuter railway into a European-style rapid rail system boasting 15 minutes-or-better service on core parts of the network.

However, the documents — obtained via a freedom of information (FOI) request made by the Ontario NDP and provided to the Star — show a new, proposed 10-year plan for GO Expansion that seemingly acknowledges a decade delay in electrifying and modernizing the network.

The 10-year plan drafted in March 2025 is a proposed plan for GO Expansion created to update the Metrolinx board of directors. It outlines an electrified network with faster travel times on the Lakeshore West and East lines, but no electrification on the Stouffville, Kitchener and Barrie lines.

In interviews last fall, some former TTC managers and executives characterized Leary as a boss with a ferocious temper who often berated staff. His behaviour, they said, created a toxic culture at the transit agency that prompted many high-ranking employees to leave. Other employees, however, spoke positively about Leary, pinning his occasional outbursts on his passion for the job.

Leary allegedly lambasted, swore at and threatened to fire an employee during an August 2020 video call in front of about 60 staff members when he thought he was on mute, according to one employee on the call.

In another heated incident from 2018, Leary reportedly slammed a door so hard in a meeting with two employees that a glass clock fell off the wall and shattered, according to sources.

Train derails in St. Catharines, Ont., CN Railway investigating

Metrolinx said GO train services are suspended between Confederation GO and Niagara Falls GO

A train derailment in St. Catharines, Ont., has caused a service disruption on the Lakeshore West trains in Niagara Falls and St. Catharines.

GO trains, Welland Canal impacted

Niagara police said Monday morning there was a train blocking Glendale Avenue near Keele Street. Later in the morning, police said the road blockage had been cleared.

Metrolinx said midday Monday GO train services are suspended between Confederation GO in Stoney Creek and Niagara Falls GO “due to a freight train issue.” That means service to St. Catharines GO is also suspended.

People can board the route 12 GO bus to Burlington GO for the train connection, Metrolinx said.

“It is strongly encouraged that non-essential travel is reconsidered, as bus service is limited.”

Nicole Giroux, spokesperson with the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation, said there was “limited delays to vessel traffic” Monday afternoon as a result of the derailment. The rail bridge at lock four at the canal was affected.

“We anticipate one-way vessel traffic to resume shortly,” Giroux said. “We will continue to monitor the situation, with a return to normal operations as conditions allow.”

After decades of being stuck in limbo, a major Toronto transit project could finally be moving ahead.

The federal, provincial and municipal governments have agreed to each provide $1 billion for the Waterfront East LRT, a long-planned line that would serve rapidly growing neighbourhoods along the East Bayfront and the Port Lands.

Premier Doug Ford made the announcement Monday at a joint news conference in Toronto with Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mayor Olivia Chow, where the trio touted their co-operation on housing and infrastructure projects.

TTC has higher costs and fewer riders than in 2019. Winning them back won’t fix financial woes, staff warn

The Toronto Transit Commission is dealing with a triple threat of existential issues: compared to 2019, fewer people are riding the system, it’s earning less revenue and its costs are significantly higher.

According to the TTC’s 2026-28 ridership growth strategy, the number of riders hovers around 82 per cent of 2019 levels. Meanwhile, revenue has dipped to 92 per cent and operating costs have gone up to 137 per cent of where they were before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The numbers were included in a report to the TTC’s strategic planning committee Tuesday, where members of the TTC board heard about efforts to fix lagging ridership.

Solutions to getting more riders on the felt red seats come with a central tension, however: the committee also heard early projections which show the transit service could be facing a budget shortfall of half a billion dollars in 2027.
