Oui!
I bought a drone three years ago. It is illegal west of the airport. Anything in the flight path and it is a no-no. It’s actually pretty cool how they know where you are. Google maps tracks you, and you get a warning. You can do it, but if you are caught, watch out!. One of these days I will take the course and get certified.
Just buy a 249g micro-drone (DJI mini). They are allowed pretty much everywhere except in military zones and jails…
That’s what I have. Under 250 grams and I don’t take any chances…not allowed in flight paths…
That’s a common misconception. You don’t need to register it, but there are still no-fly zones all over the island of Montreal.
Tiny little areas of Montréal-Est, Pierrefonds, and Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue… that’s it.
You need to open the options and check the micro-drones (<250g).
There’s a new controversy now because I have read the latest DJI Mini 5 is a couple of grams above the limit.
Yes. There are still no-fly zones all over the island, even for “microdrones,” not just in “military zones and jails.” For example, all the lovely drone footage we’ve seen of the REM running between Portal Heights and Bois-Franc was shot within the three smaller prohibited zones northeast of the larger CYUL zone. Also, the more lax regs for microdrones nevertheless come with strong cautions for flying them in all the 250g+ prohibition zones. As the poster above said, it’s a risk. They track you, and if you knowingly or unknowingly cause an incursion, they’ll find you.
If you look on the map above carefully, these zones are yellow with a red outline. They are not prohibited. So nothing is illegal there. Just use caution.
Are you trying to be a drone police?
The only real known drone incident that occurred in Canada in the past years was caused by law enforcement themselves. Air transportation safety investigation report A21O0069 - Transportation Safety Board of Canada
