As an artist myself, I can say that any artist (and I include architects) strive for beauty in all their design. An artist definitely thinks design first, money later. But artists always have to answer to clients - the developers in this case. I’m sure every architect out there would love to output with utmost creativity but developers see wealth in different ways in different places. In cities in Europe and Asia, it’s how prominent their buildings are. Here it seems to be how much profit you can reap with the land you have. A common problem when there’s so few developers pushing the boundaries in a specific city. Lack of competition basically along with a lack of design requirements by the city. So i would really put the blame on the developers here. More often than not, they’re probably sending designs back to the architects with notes like “looks cool but too expensive, simplify it”. And then we get a box.

Boxes can be beautiful. Actually, that’s the whole job of the architect : dealing with a budget but still make something that is stunning. Beautiful design can come with tight budget. But it can’t come with lack of ambition and vision.

As someone who actually works in that field, there are bad architects working on projects too big to be handled by mediocre people, and there is a combined lack of vision from the city. This is why project like this one are the exception rather than the norm. Promoters want to make money - and they do. A lot. And their budget are enormous. They can afford architectural quality, even if we don’t have ‘high end’ projects full of marble and gold plated doorknobs.

Actually, the first version for the project at 900 St-Jacques, for example, was an ugly mess. And I’m REALLY glad that finally, this time, the city stood firm and said no. Clearly. So the promoter changed architects - not the budget - and that change was paramount, and led us to have something really neat, clean, contemporary, not tacky, not ‘look-at-me-im-an-object’ and definitly integrated within the urbanscape.

No change in budget, 2 totally different projects. Because what makes a project beautiful is the Architect + the ambition, vision and thrive for quality from the city.

The Hyatt Regency—err, Delta—err, Evo student residences will be dwarfed soon.
